Welcome to St Mary-on-the-Quay!
We are a Roman Catholic Church in Bristol (Diocese of Clifton), England. Our church was completed in 1840. The architect was Richard Shackleton Pope. "The river Frome in front of the church was covered over in 1893; the area eventually became Colston Avenue ." The church was built by the Irvingites (the Catholic Apostolic Church; "distanced themselves from the Presbyterian origins of their founder-Edward Irving and developed more along High Anglican and Roman Catholic lines"). A few years later (1843), the church was taken over by the Roman Catholic Church. The first parish priest of our church was Fr. Patrick O'Farrell, a Fransiscan Friar. When he retired from St Mary's in 1857, the church then was under the care of priests of the Society of Jesus (SJ) until they handed it over to the Diocese of Clifton in 1996. And since 2004 the church has been served by priests of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) from the Irish British Province (IBP) .
Where are we?
